Palmer Woods Share the Love
CLOTHING DRIVE
Saturday, February 26, 2011
Thank you Palmer Woods Residents for making the 2010 and 2011 Palmer Woods Clothing Drives a success.
The Palmer Woods Association wants to continue our efforts to assist families who are less fortunate by providing another opportunity for all of us to clear our homes of gently used, unwanted and un-needed clothing. This year’s donations went to The Society of Saint Vincent de Paul Detroit Thrift Stores.
Spearheaded by Palmer Woods board member Karoy Brooks, the second annual “Share Some Love Clothing Drive” was met with enthusiasm. Thirty-seven generous neighbors responded and sifted through their closets, basements and attics to pack up their gently-used clothing. Early on the morning of February 26, they left donation bags of clothes by their front doors.
By the end of the day, the collection truck was loaded to the ceiling with a large box in the front seat.
Braving the cold to pick up bags and drop them off at Saint Vincent de Paul was a multi-generational team, including PWA President Craig Vanderburg, Karoy and Nelson Brooks and their grandchildren, Ron Rivers and his children and George Cook. Behind the scenes, Barbara Barefield and Sandra Powell help to organize the day’s activities.
“Saint Vincent de Paul could not believe the amount of clothes and shoes we had,” Karoy Brooks, Chair of the Clothing Drive, stated. “They were so appreciative. Thanks to everyone again and again. Hoorah for your time, efforts and concerns! I thank the neighbors for taking time out to gather the items to be donated!”
For over 125 years the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul has worked to break the cycle of poverty by providing the Greater Detroit Area with an array of goods, services, and shelter, including utility assistance to prevent shut offs. SVdP has also given children, who may be economically challenged or from troubled families in southeastern Michigan, summer camping experiences for over 85 years at Camps Ozanam and Stapleton in Port Huron, Michigan, at no cost to the campers. Camp expenses are covered by the generosity of donors.
The Palmer Woods Association wants to continue our efforts to assist families who are less fortunate by providing opportunities, such as our clothing drive, to share with the community.
