Experience Mardi Gras in Detroit with authentic New Orleans jazz treasure
saxophonist Charlie Gabriel and his quartet featuring Ragtime pianist Taslimah
Bey. Enjoy the music of Jelly Roll Morton and New Orleans, and taste jambalaya
and Louisiana-style food in a gorgeous Palmer Woods home.
Charlie was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, in 1932 and hails from a famous
musical family. Charlie came to Detroit at the age of 14. He was so experienced
that he got into the Lionel Hampton outfit at age 16; in the early ’70s,
Charlie was a member of Aretha Franklin’s Orchestra. He continued to play
throughout the states and abroad. He also worked with Nancy Wilson, Joe Simon, J.C.
Heard and many others.
Currently, Charlie performs with his band, the Gabriel
Traditional Jazz Band, in the United States, Europe and Asia. He also performs
regularly with trumpeter Marcus Belgrave presenting special tributes to Louis
Armstrong, New Orleans, and Ray Charles. Be sure to put Jan. 26 on your
calendar, because, as the MetroTimes promises, “He conjures up a joyful spirit. You
always have a good time with Charlie.”
