Jazz Fest in the Woods

The last weekend in June, enjoy three unique jazz performances featuring diverse styles ranging from Afro-Caribbean to bebop and beyond. The music is inspired by the sounds and rhythms from north and south of the equator, Africa, the heartbeat of Jazz Town Detroit, and from the creative composing and improvisational skills of some of our area's great talents.

The concerts will be held on June 24, 25 and 26, under the stars and in the summer sunshine, beneath a tent set in the gardens of the Boreman-Redstone Abode, a special Palmer Woods home. A portion of the home will be open to tour, and the son of Louis Redstone, the architect who designed the home, and/or our Palmer Woods historian will discuss the architecture, history and design of the home. Each event will include a delicious buffet of wonderful food, desserts and beverages.

If you haven’t seen or heard Marion Hayden perform, you’re in for an spectacular experience. The ubiquitous bassist is one of the most sought-after Detroit musicians for local and national artists. She is a founding member of the all-women Straight Ahead ensemble, band leader, composer, educator and recording artist.

Palmer Woods’ intrepid musical explorer A. Spencer Barefield leads a quintet that winds through jazz from the traditional to outer limitless space. Saxophonist David McMurray, keyboardist Luis Resto, bassist Jaribu Shahid and drummer Djallo Djakate Keita collectively have accomplished careers in jazz, classical, pop, African rhythms and rap.

Orquestra La Inspiracion

There is nothing better to get your body shaking on a velvety twilight than the Latin grooves of Orquesta La Inspiracion. Led by Puerto Rican-born congero Ozzie Rivera and music director-pianist Bill Meyer, this 10-piece unit honors the traditions of merengue, cumbia and Afro-Caribbean jazz while forging new directions in Latin music.
